Lot closed - unsold
Estimate:
$50 - $100

Description:

This steel plate engraving was published in a geography book in 1872.  It was common back then to refer to surfing as “bathing” or “swimming in the surf” and also common to refer to Hawaii as the “Sandwich Islands” (when Cpt. James Cook “discovered” the islands in 1788, he named them the “Sandwich Islands” after the Earl of Sandwich, a major financial backer of Cook’s voyages).  Frame is 11 x 8 inches with the surfing engraving 6 1/2 x 4 inches.
